NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Win over Grimsby keeps cup run alive
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1959 Forest beat Grimsby Town 4–1 in the FA Cup on their way to Wembley.
Forest took another confident step in their 1958–59 FA Cup run with a 4-1 fourth-round win over Grimsby Town at the City Ground.
Billy Walker’s side had needed a replay to get past Tooting & Mitcham United in the previous round, but this time there was no long struggle. Jeff Whitefoot settled any nerves by scoring after only five minutes, and Billy Gray then took control of the tie with two goals before half-time, the second from the penalty spot.
By the interval, Forest were already in command. Tommy Wilson added a fourth on the hour, turning the afternoon into a comfortable passage through, before Johnny Scott scored a late consolation for Grimsby.
The win sent Forest into the fifth round against Birmingham City, a tie that would take three matches to settle. The road to Wembley still had plenty of drama ahead, but this was one of the cleaner afternoons in the run that ended with Forest beating Luton Town 2-1 to lift the FA Cup.
