Happy birthday Viv Anderson! (born 1956)
On this day in 1956 European Cup hero Viv Anderson is born.
Viv Anderson became one of Nottingham Forest’s most important defenders and one of English football’s landmark figures.
He was a key part of the Forest side that won the First Division title and then conquered Europe under Brian Clough. Strong, quick and composed, Anderson gave Forest quality at full-back in a team built on discipline, balance and belief.
His place in wider football history was also secured when he became the first Black footballer to play for England’s senior men’s team. That achievement gave his career significance far beyond the City Ground, while his Forest medals showed that he was also operating at the highest club level.
For supporters, Anderson’s birthday marks a player who belonged fully to the club’s golden era. He was not only part of great Forest teams; he helped define their standard, and his England breakthrough remains one of the most important individual milestones connected to the club.
