Third Division South champions
On this day in 1951 Forest complete their Third Division South title-winning season.
Nottingham Forest completed their Third Division South title-winning season with a 3-2 away win over Swindon Town.
The final match gave Forest a winning finish to a successful campaign. After a difficult period in the club’s history, the Third Division South title marked an important step back upward.
Forest had already put together the consistency needed to top the division, and the victory at Swindon gave the season a strong closing note. Winning away from home on the final day added to the sense that the side had earned its promotion properly.
The title mattered because it helped reset the club’s direction. Forest would go on to rebuild further during the 1950s, eventually returning to the First Division and winning the FA Cup later in the decade.
The 1950-51 championship is not as famous as the club’s later Wembley and European nights, but it was a vital lower-league honour in Forest’s long climb back.
