Man Utd knocked out at Maine Road
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1947 Forest beat Manchester United 2–0 at Maine Road in the FA Cup fourth round.
Forest produced a major post-war FA Cup result by beating Manchester United 2-0 at Maine Road in the fourth round.
United were using Maine Road because Old Trafford had been badly damaged during the war, so this was officially a Manchester United home tie played across the city. Forest, then a Second Division side, made the setting work in their favour against top-flight opposition.
Billy Walker’s team struck first after 31 minutes, Eddie Barks giving Forest the lead before half-time. United still had time to force their way back into the tie, but Forest held their nerve and then made the afternoon safe when Colin Lyman scored in the 68th minute.
The 2-0 win sent Forest into the fifth round and gave the club one of its sharper immediate post-war cup victories. The run ended in the next round after a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at the City Ground was followed by a 6-2 replay defeat at Ayresome Park.
