19th century win over Bury in 1st Div
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1895 Forest beat Bury 5–0 in an early top-flight home win.
Nottingham Forest opened their 1895-96 First Division campaign with a commanding 5-0 home win over Bury at the Town Ground.
The result came in the early years of Forest’s top-flight life, before the club moved to the City Ground. A five-goal league win gave the season a powerful start and showed Forest capable of producing emphatic home results against established Football League opposition.
The scoreline carried its own weight. Forest beat Bury by five clear goals in front of a crowd recorded at around 5,000, beginning the campaign with the kind of home performance that would have sent supporters away with confidence.
The win now matters partly because of its age. It belongs to Forest’s Town Ground period, before so much of the club’s later identity became tied to the banks of the Trent. As an early top-flight marker, the 5-0 victory over Bury remains a simple but strong reminder of Forest’s long league history.
