Early floodlit match
On this day in 1889 Forest play a floodlit match at the Gregory Ground.
Nottingham Forest took part in an early floodlit football experiment when they played Notts Rangers at the Gregory Ground under artificial lights.
The match ended in a 2-0 defeat for Forest, but the occasion is remembered less for the score than for its place in football’s developing relationship with artificial light. Floodlit football was still unusual, and staging a match under lights in Nottingham made the evening stand out.
The Gregory Ground setting gives the event an older texture, from a period before modern stadium routines and regular night matches. Forest were part of a football world still discovering what the game could look like outside traditional afternoon conditions.
The defeat to Notts Rangers was the result on the night, but the wider interest came from the setting and technology.
