Malmö win echoes 1979 final
On this day in 2025 Forest beat Malmö 3–0 on a nostalgic Europa League night at the City Ground.
Forest turned a night of European nostalgia into a convincing 3–0 win over Malmö at the City Ground in the Europa League.
The fixture carried obvious history because Malmö had been Forest’s opponents in the 1979 European Cup final. The club marked that link before kick-off by honouring former players from the final.
Ryan Yates opened the scoring after a quick throw led to Nikola Milenković crossing from the right and the ball deflecting into Yates’s path, where he finished from inside the box. Arnaud Kalimuendo made it 2–0 by following in after Yates’s header was saved, with James McAtee’s chipped ball having picked out Yates at the back post.
Milenković added the third after Murillo kept a corner alive and Yates’s volley was blocked, leaving the defender to finish from close range.
The win strengthened Forest’s Europa League knockout-phase hopes. Forest eventually reached the semi-finals before losing 4–1 on aggregate to Aston Villa.
