NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Hennessey retirement announced
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2025 former Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey announces his retirement from playing.
Wayne Hennessey’s retirement brought an end to a long goalkeeping career built on endurance, experience and international service.
The former Forest goalkeeper announced he was retiring from professional football after a career that included spells with Wolves, Crystal Palace, Burnley, Forest and Wales. Hhe retired aged 38 as Wales’ most-capped goalkeeper, with 109 appearances for his country.
His Forest spell came late in that career. Signed in 2022 after promotion, he gave the squad senior cover and experience as the club adjusted to life back in the Premier League.
Hennessey’s wider career was shaped most strongly by Wales. He was part of the national team’s modern rise, including Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, which gave his retirement a significance beyond any single club spell.
For Forest supporters, his time at the City Ground was a short piece of a much bigger career. His retirement marked the end of a professional journey that had stretched across clubs, countries and some of Wales’ biggest football moments.
