Edu controversial appointment
On this day in 2025 Nottingham Forest controversially appointed Edu Gaspar as Global Head of Football.
Nottingham Forest appointed former Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar to the newly created position of Global Head of Football, describing the move as an important step in the club’s long-term development.
Edu was given oversight of Forest’s football-related operations, including recruitment, performance, squad strategy and player development. His wider remit was also reported to involve the other clubs in Evangelos Marinakis’ football network, including Olympiacos and Rio Ave.
The appointment initially appeared to be a major statement of ambition. Edu had helped rebuild Arsenal into Premier League title challengers, while Forest were preparing to return to European competition following their best league season for three decades.
Within weeks, however, his arrival had become entangled in a damaging dispute involving head coach Nuno Espírito Santo. Nuno had recently signed a new contract until 2028 after leading Forest to seventh place, but reports suggested he was unhappy with the changing recruitment structure and feared that transfer targets were being pursued without sufficient agreement between the club’s football departments.
During August, Nuno publicly described the squad as unbalanced and admitted that his previously close relationship with Marinakis was no longer good. He said discussions were needed with both the owner and Edu, while Forest sources maintained that Edu’s appointment had not formally reduced Nuno’s responsibilities as head coach.
Rumours about Nuno’s future intensified, with Ange Postecoglou being linked with the job while Nuno was still in charge. Nuno was dismissed on 9 September, only three Premier League matches into the season, despite having guided Forest back into Europe. Postecoglou was appointed as his replacement soon afterwards.
Edu remained influential following Nuno’s departure and was later credited alongside George Syrianos with leading the process that appointed Sean Dyche in October. As Forest’s season became increasingly turbulent, however, Edu’s own recruitment record, authority and long-term future began to attract scrutiny.
By early March 2026, reports claimed that Marinakis had instructed Edu to stay away from both the Nigel Doughty Academy and the City Ground. Further reports said the two parties were finalising the terms of his departure, bringing an apparent end to a high-profile appointment that had lasted only eight months. Forest had not formally announced his exit at that stage, but his ambitious global football project at the club appeared to have unravelled almost as quickly as it had begun.
