Sels penalty heroics beat Ipswich
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2025 Sels sends Forest into the FA Cup quarter-finals on penalties.
Nottingham Forest reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after Matz Sels made the decisive save in a penalty shootout against Ipswich Town at the City Ground.
The fifth-round tie finished 1-1 after extra time. Ipswich took the lead through George Hirst, leaving Forest needing a response in front of their own supporters. Ryan Yates supplied it, meeting Anthony Elanga’s inswinging cross and nodding home the equaliser that kept the cup tie alive and pushed the night towards extra time and penalties..
The shootout was almost perfect until the pressure finally told. Forest converted all five of their penalties, and Sels dived to his left to save Jack Taylor’s sudden-death kick. It was the moment that turned a difficult evening into a cup celebration.
The 5-4 shootout win sent Forest into the FA Cup quarter-finals and continued a dramatic cup run under Nuno Espírito Santo. It was not a smooth performance, but cup football often belongs to nerve, timing and one decisive intervention. On this night, Sels provided it.
