Forest survived a difficult FA Cup night against Exeter City, going through 4–2 on penalties after a 2–2 draw at St James Park.

Exeter took an early lead through Josh Magennis, but Forest turned the game around before half-time through Ramon Sosa and Taiwo Awoniyi. The home side forced extra time after the break, and the tie eventually went to penalties after Exeter had been reduced to ten men.

Neco Williams scored the decisive penalty in the shootout as Forest avoided a major upset against League One opposition. It was not a routine cup win, but it kept Nuno Espírito Santo’s side alive in the competition.

Forest went on to beat Ipswich Town in the fifth round and Brighton & Hove Albion in the quarter-final before losing to Manchester City in the semi-final at Wembley. The Exeter tie became one of the awkward but important steps in that FA Cup run.
