Gibbs-White winner lifts side off bottom
On this day in 2022 Forest beat Crystal Palace 1–0 to move off the Premier League bottom before the World Cup break.
Nottingham Forest went into the World Cup break with a vital lift, beating Crystal Palace 1–0 at the City Ground to move off the bottom of the Premier League.
Palace had the chance to take control before half-time when Wilfried Zaha won a penalty, but he dragged his effort wide. Forest improved after the break and found the decisive moment through Morgan Gibbs-White, who turned in a rebound after Vicente Guaita had saved Brennan Johnson’s shot.
The goal was initially checked, but it stood after VAR review, giving Gibbs-White a winner in one of the most important early matches of Forest’s return to the top flight. Steve Cooper’s side had endured a difficult start after promotion, yet home wins over Liverpool, Tottenham and Palace had begun to change the mood.
The table still looked uncomfortable, but this result mattered for timing as much as position. Forest did not spend the World Cup pause at the bottom, and the City Ground had another Premier League win to hold onto.
