Awoniyi winner stuns Liverpool
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2022 Forest beat Liverpool 1–0 through Taiwo Awoniyi’s winner at the City Ground.
Forest produced one of the defining results of their Premier League return by beating Liverpool 1–0 at the City Ground.
Steve Cooper’s side had come back into the top flight after 23 years away, and the early months were difficult. Liverpool arrived with far greater recent pedigree, but Forest turned the afternoon into a survival-season memory.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal in the 55th minute. Joe Gomez conceded the free kick, Steve Cook brought the ball down and drove it across goal, and Awoniyi forced in the rebound after his first effort came back off the post.
The goal gave the match its story, but the result needed a full defensive effort. Forest had to protect the lead through the second half, with Dean Henderson making a major stoppage-time save from Virgil van Dijk.
The win did not solve the season by itself, but it became a major emotional marker. Forest eventually stayed up, and the Liverpool victory remained one of the afternoons that made survival feel possible.
