21 signings set English record
On this day in 2022 Forest complete an English-record summer transfer window with 21 new signings.
Nottingham Forest’s return to the Premier League brought one of the most extraordinary transfer windows English football had seen.
After promotion through the Championship play-offs, Forest rebuilt at a pace rarely associated with a newly promoted club. By the close of the summer window, 21 new players had arrived, creating an English top-flight record and giving Steve Cooper a squad that looked dramatically different from the one that had won at Wembley.
The scale of the turnover reflected both opportunity and pressure. Forest needed to replace loan players, add Premier League experience, and build enough depth for a level the club had not played at since 1999. Supporters watched a summer of constant movement, with excitement mixed with the obvious risk of so many changes at once.
The season that followed was tense and uneven, but Forest eventually stayed up. That made the record-breaking window feel messy, expensive and necessary all at the same time: a chaotic transfer summer that became part of the story of the club’s Premier League return.
