Nottingham Forest’s first Premier League win after 23 years away came with a 1-0 victory over West Ham United at the City Ground.

Forest were back at home in the top flight for the first time since returning through the 2022 play-offs, and the match quickly became one of the key early markers of the new Premier League era.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal just before half-time. The finish was untidy but decisive, the ball going in off him after a move involving Jesse Lingard and a ricochet in the West Ham box.

West Ham had a goal ruled out, hit the woodwork, and then saw Declan Rice’s penalty saved by Dean Henderson after Scott McKenna was penalised for handball.

That save became one of the defining moments of the afternoon. Forest held on to secure their first Premier League victory since returning, a result that gave Steve Cooper’s newly promoted side an important early boost.
