City Ground redevelopment approved
On this day in 2022 City Ground redevelopment plans are approved.
Nottingham Forest’s City Ground redevelopment plans received approval shortly before the club’s Premier League return season began.
Rushcliffe Borough Council approved the plans at a time when Forest were preparing for top-flight football again after 23 years away. The timing gave the decision extra weight, because the club’s future on the pitch and at the stadium suddenly felt connected.
The plans were centred on expanding and modernising the City Ground, a venue with deep emotional meaning for supporters. Redevelopment carried excitement, but also sensitivity, because any change to the ground had to respect what made it feel like home.
The approval did not mean immediate transformation, and the stadium question continued to involve planning, cost and timing. Even so, the decision was an important step in Forest’s attempt to grow while keeping the City Ground at the heart of the club’s identity.
