Jesse Lingard’s arrival gave Nottingham Forest one of the headline signings of their Premier League return summer.

The move attracted attention well beyond the City Ground. Lingard had England experience, Manchester United pedigree and a recent loan spell at West Ham United that had reminded everyone of his attacking quality.

For Forest, the signing showed ambition after promotion. The club was trying to build quickly for the Premier League, and bringing in a player with Lingard’s profile made clear that the rebuild was not going to be cautious or quiet.

In the end, the move did not deliver what supporters had hoped. Lingard made 20 appearances in all competitions, but did not score or assist in 17 Premier League appearances and fell out of favour after the turn of the year.

For supporters, the transfer remains a symbol of that chaotic but exciting return to the Premier League. It felt like a statement of intent when it happened, but it also showed the risk of building so quickly in a market Forest had been away from for more than two decades.
