Marinakis Cooper letter after promotion
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2022 Evangelos Marinakis and Steve Cooper write to Forest supporters after Wembley promotion.
Evangelos Marinakis and Steve Cooper’s joint letter arrived while Forest supporters were still absorbing promotion back to the Premier League.
Forest’s promotion letter was more than a polite thank-you; it set out how the club wanted to treat its Premier League return.
The message followed the 1-0 Wembley play-off final win over Huddersfield Town, which ended 23 years outside the top flight. It told supporters that Forest belonged in the Premier League and promised Steve Cooper and his staff the backing needed to compete at that level.
Marinakis also made the ambition clear. The letter said the aim was not only to stay in the Premier League, but to perform well, with Cooper placed at the centre of the next stage after transforming the club’s season.
The strongest part of the message was its sense of a new chapter. It respected Forest’s history under Brian Clough, but argued that the club now had to stop living only on past memories and write a new history of its own.
