Cooper first win at Barnsley
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2021 Steve Cooper earns his first Forest win at Barnsley.
Nottingham Forest’s first win under Steve Cooper arrived with a 3-1 comeback victory over Barnsley at Oakwell.
Forest had fallen behind to Cauley Woodrow’s first-half penalty, leaving Cooper’s side with work to do after the break. The response was decisive. Philip Zinckernagel equalised early in the second half, Brennan Johnson put Forest ahead, and Lewis Grabban finished the job with the third goal.
The win mattered because it gave Cooper an immediate result to build on. Forest had started the season badly, but the second-half turnaround at Barnsley quickly changed the feel of his opening week in charge.
What followed made the night feel even more important. Cooper’s appointment became the turning point of the season, and Forest went from the bottom end of the Championship to promotion through the play-offs. Barnsley was the first win of that extraordinary climb.
