COVID restart draw at Sheff Wed
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2020 Forest resume the COVID-interrupted season with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
Forest returned to Championship action in strange, empty surroundings with a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield Wednesday.
The match was played behind closed doors as the 2019-20 season resumed after the COVID-19 suspension. For supporters watching from home, it was football returning, but not football as they knew it: no away end, no normal matchday noise, and no shared release inside the stadium.
Forest took the lead in the 69th minute through Joe Lolley. Brice Samba’s long ball released him, the offside flag stayed down, and Lolley’s first touch took him into position before he finished low into the bottom corner.
Sheffield Wednesday rescued a point in stoppage time when Alessio Da Cruz’s corner was headed in by Connor Wickham in the 93rd minute. The result left Forest with a point rather than the win that would have strengthened their play-off position.
The draw was disappointing, but the match is now remembered for how strange football felt on its return. Forest were back, the Championship was moving again, and yet the empty stands made it feel like a matchday with something important missing.
