Lamouchi rewarded before restart
On this day in 2020 Forest reward Sabri Lamouchi with a new contract.
Sabri Lamouchi’s new contract arrived at a moment when Forest were still in the Championship promotion picture.
The club were fifth in the table before the delayed restart, with the season having been disrupted by the wider pause in football. Rewarding Lamouchi with a new deal reflected the position Forest had put themselves in and the belief that the campaign could still end successfully.
For supporters, the timing mattered. Forest had spent much of the season looking capable of competing near the top end of the division, and a contract extension suggested stability before the final stretch.
Lamouchi had brought organisation and a sense of direction. The squad were not yet promoted, and nothing had been settled, but Forest were close enough to the play-off places for the decision to feel significant.
The memory of the deal is sharpened by what came next. Forest’s promotion push collapsed after the restart, and a 4-1 home defeat to Stoke City on the final day saw them miss out on the play-offs by one goal. The new contract therefore became a reminder of how quickly optimism turned into frustration.
