Carvalho becomes record signing
On this day in 2018 Forest confirm João Carvalho as a club-record signing.
João Carvalho’s arrival from Benfica gave Forest a club-record signing and a clear statement of intent.
The deal brought the Portuguese midfielder to the City Ground for a club-record fee reported in the UK as around £13m, with Benfica confirming the transfer at €15m. Forest also confirmed the loan signing of Diogo Gonçalves from Benfica, making it a notable day in the club’s summer business.
Carvalho arrived with expectation because of both the fee and his background. A creative player from one of Portugal’s biggest clubs, he represented the kind of signing that naturally drew attention from supporters.
Record transfers always carry extra pressure. They are judged not only as squad additions, but as signs of ambition and direction. For Forest, this was a moment that suggested the club were prepared to invest heavily in technical quality.
The signing is remembered because it marked a financial benchmark, but it did not become the transformative success Forest hoped for. Carvalho showed flashes of technical quality, especially in his first season, yet he never fully justified the club-record fee and eventually left having become a reminder of how uncertain major transfer statements can be.
