Carayol and Cummings sink Shrewsbury
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2017 Forest edge past Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup first round.
Forest moved into the second round of the League Cup with a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town at the City Ground.
The match carried the awkward feel of an early-round cup tie. Forest were expected to progress, but Shrewsbury made sure the evening never became completely comfortable.
Mustapha Carayol opened the scoring from the penalty spot, giving Forest control before Jason Cummings added a second with a left-footed finish after a Chris Cohen pass. Those goals looked enough to settle the tie, but the visitors forced late nerves.
Shaun Whalley pulled one back for Shrewsbury from the spot, and Dimi Evtimov had to make an injury-time save to prevent the game going to extra time.
The final whistle brought relief more than celebration. Forest had done what they needed, avoided a cup upset, and moved on from a first-round tie that became far tighter than it had once seemed.
