NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Brereton earns long term deal
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2017 Ben Brereton signs a new long-term Forest contract.
Ben Brereton’s long-term contract marked the rise of a young forward who had broken into the Forest first team as a teenager.
Brereton had already begun to make the transition from academy prospect to senior player. He scored three goals in 18 first-team appearances in his breakthrough season, including a late winner against Aston Villa, and his energy, confidence and direct style made him an exciting player for supporters to follow.
The new deal tied him to Forest until 2021 and showed that the club saw him as part of its future. For a young attacking player attracting attention, that carried reassurance as well as ambition.
In the end, the contract became part of a short but notable Forest chapter rather than the start of a long stay. Brereton moved to Blackburn Rovers the following year, but his rise at Forest had already shown how quickly an academy forward could become a valuable senior asset.
