Worrall captains Toulon triumph
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2017 Joe Worrall captains England to the Toulon Tournament title.
Joe Worrall captained England to the Toulon Tournament title, giving a young Forest defender a proud international milestone.
England drew 1-1 with Ivory Coast in the final before winning 5-3 on penalties. David Brooks scored for England after a counter-attack involving Harvey Barnes, and the game then had to be settled from the spot.
For Worrall, the occasion mattered because he led the side rather than simply taking part. Captaining an England youth team in a tournament final carried its own pressure, particularly in a match that remained tight and had to be decided by penalties.
The Toulon Tournament has often been a stage for emerging players, and this success placed Worrall among a group of young English footballers gaining tournament experience abroad. For Forest supporters, it was also a reminder that one of their own academy-developed defenders was earning responsibility at international level.
Worrall returned from the final not only as a promising centre-back, but as a tournament-winning England captain.
