Simon Cox lob wins goal award
On this day in 2012 Simon Cox scores his award-winning two-touch lob against Birmingham City.
Simon Cox scored one of Nottingham Forest’s most elegant modern goals with a two-touch lob against Birmingham City.
Forest were 2-0 down in a Championship match at the City Ground when Cox gave the afternoon its defining moment. Lewis McGugan floated a long, cross-pitch ball towards him, and Cox’s first touch killed the ball beautifully while taking him away from pressure.
His second touch was even better. With Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland off his line, Cox lifted the ball over him with control and imagination, turning a difficult situation into a finish that looked instinctive and deliberate at the same time.
Forest fought back to draw 2-2, with Cox’s goal helping change the mood of the match. The strike later won the Football League Goal of the Year award, and it remains remembered less as a rescue act than as a piece of pure technique.
