Steve Cotterill arrived at Nottingham Forest with the club looking for stability after Steve McClaren’s short and difficult spell.

Forest appointed Cotterill on a three-and-a-half-year contract, bringing him in from Portsmouth after McClaren had resigned. The timing gave the move an urgent feel. Forest had started the Championship season badly, and the club needed a manager who could quickly steady results and restore some structure.

His start gave supporters something immediate to hold onto. Forest beat Middlesbrough 2–0 in his first match in charge, with Marcus Tudgay and Lewis McGugan scoring. Tudgay finished a flowing move for the opener, and McGugan added the second shortly after half-time to end Middlesbrough’s unbeaten league start.

The spell soon became more complicated. Forest went through a poor run, slipped into danger, and had to fight through a difficult winter. Cotterill eventually guided the side to 19th place, ten points clear of relegation.

His time ended in July 2012 after the Al-Hasawi takeover. It was a short reign, remembered less for progress than for survival during an unsettled period.
