Kris Commons made sure Nottingham Forest avoided any FA Cup awkwardness by scoring a first-half hat-trick in a 5–0 first-round win over Yeading at the City Ground.

Yeading arrived from Conference South, two levels below Forest, but they had earned their place in the first round proper. Their cup run had taken them past Ramsgate, Farnborough after a replay, and St Albans City in the fourth qualifying round.

That made them a proper non-league cup opponent rather than just another name in the draw. Forest were expected to win, but those are exactly the afternoons that can become uncomfortable if the favourite starts slowly. Commons removed that danger by scoring in the 19th, 32nd and first-half stoppage-time minutes, putting Forest 3–0 up before the interval.

Junior Agogo added two more after the break, the first from the penalty spot, to complete a straightforward 5–0 win. Forest did the job early, avoided a replay, and Commons gave the tie its standout moment with a hat-trick before half-time.
