Goalless draw seals UEFA Cup progress
On this day in 1995 Forest draw 0–0 with Auxerre to progress in the UEFA Cup.
Nottingham Forest protected a narrow European lead at the City Ground to move past Auxerre in the UEFA Cup.
Forest drew 0–0 on the night, but the result was enough because Steve Stone’s goal in France had given Frank Clark’s side a 1–0 first-leg advantage. The second leg was not remembered for scoring drama; it was about holding the tie together and seeing the job through.
Mark Crossley started in goal, with players including Steve Chettle, Colin Cooper, Stuart Pearce, Chris Bart-Williams, Stone and Jason Lee involved in the squad. Against a strong Auxerre side, Forest had to make the earlier away win count.
The goalless draw sealed a 1–0 aggregate victory and took Forest into the next round. They later beat Lyon by the same 1–0 aggregate score before Bayern Munich ended the run in the quarter-finals, 7–2 on aggregate.
For supporters, the night mattered because progress in Europe had become rare again. Forest did not need fireworks against Auxerre; they needed the aggregate score to stay exactly where it was.
