Collymore stunner sinks Man Utd
On this day in 1994 Stan Collymore scores a brilliant goal as Forest beat Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Stan Collymore produced one of Nottingham Forest’s great Premier League goals in a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The goal came in the first half after Forest found space around United’s penalty area. Steve Stone, Des Lyttle and Scot Gemmill were involved in the build-up, Ian Woan had an effort, and Bryan Roy then helped the ball on to Collymore. From there, Collymore struck left-footed with the kind of power and confidence that made him so dangerous in that 1994-95 season.
Forest later went 2-0 up through Stuart Pearce, before Eric Cantona headed in from a Ryan Giggs corner to pull one back for United. That left the final part of the match tense, but Frank Clark’s side held on for a result that underlined how strong the newly promoted team had become.
The goal remains the centrepiece of the memory. Collymore had pace, strength and a fierce shot, and this was one of the clearest examples of why Premier League defences found him so difficult to handle.
