NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Collymore earns Man Utd draw
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1994 Stan Collymore scores as Forest draw with reigning champions Manchester United.
Stan Collymore announced Forest’s Premier League return in force by scoring in a 1-1 draw with reigning champions Manchester United at the City Ground.
The match came early in the 1994-95 season, with Forest newly promoted under Frank Clark and facing the strongest club side in England. Manchester United had won the league and cup double the previous season, so this was an immediate test of Forest’s level.
United went ahead through Andrei Kanchelskis, but Forest responded quickly. Bryan Roy supplied the pass for Collymore, who finished with his right foot to bring Forest level.
The goal mattered beyond the point it earned. Collymore had been central to Forest’s promotion from the second tier, and this was an early sign that his power and finishing could trouble Premier League defenders as well.
Forest would go on to finish third that season and qualify for Europe. The draw with Manchester United was part of that early statement: the promoted side were not just back in the Premier League, they were ready to compete.
