Southend win boosts promotion push
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1993 Forest beat Southend United at the City Ground during the promotion campaign.
Nottingham Forest kept their promotion campaign moving with a 2-0 win over Southend United at the City Ground.
The match came in League Division 1, with Frank Clark’s side trying to build momentum after relegation from the Premier League. Colin Cooper gave Forest the lead shortly before half-time, scoring in the 43rd minute.
Southend arrived above Forest in the table, so the result carried more weight than a routine home win. Kingsley Black made the points safe in the 78th minute, and the win moved Forest from 11th to 10th.
Forest went on to finish second in 1993-94 and earn promotion back to the Premier League. In a campaign built gradually rather than spectacularly, this was one of the useful December results that helped keep the push moving.
