League Cup victory over West Ham
On this day in 1993 Forest knock West Ham United out of the League Cup at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest’s League Cup win over West Ham United gave the City Ground a useful cup night during a season of rebuilding under Frank Clark.
Forest won 2–1 in the third round after falling behind. Stan Collymore brought Forest level, and Kingsley Black scored the winner to send Forest through.
The result carried more than routine cup value because of the stage the club was in. Forest were outside the Premier League after relegation, but the squad contained attacking quality and a sense that promotion momentum could be rebuilt.
Collymore’s name gave the tie extra weight. His goals and presence became central to Forest’s push back towards the top flight, and this League Cup victory over West Ham fitted into the early part of that renewed upward movement.
Forest later reached the fifth round of the League Cup, but the season’s bigger story was promotion: Frank Clark’s side finished second in the First Division and returned to the Premier League.
