Roy Keane record sale
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1993 Roy Keane leaves Forest for Manchester United.
Roy Keane’s departure to Manchester United was one of the defining transfer moments after Nottingham Forest’s relegation from the Premier League.
The midfielder left for a £3.75m British-record fee, a figure that showed both his quality and the scale of the loss for Forest. Keane had become one of the brightest young players in English football, combining aggression, stamina and authority far beyond his age.
For Forest supporters, the transfer hurt because it came at a moment of decline. The club had gone down, Brian Clough had retired, and now one of the team’s outstanding talents was leaving for the champions.
The move became a landmark in English football finance, but at the City Ground it felt more personal. Keane went on to become a central figure at Manchester United, while Forest were left facing a new era without the player who had embodied so much drive in midfield.
