Clough's final City Ground match
On this day in 1993 Brian Clough takes charge of his final City Ground match.
Brian Clough took charge of his final City Ground match after eighteen unforgettable years as Nottingham Forest manager.
Forest lost 2–0 to Sheffield United, with Glyn Hodges and Brian Gayle scoring for the visitors, but the result quickly became secondary to the emotional farewell unfolding around the stadium.
Supporters knew they were saying goodbye to the manager who had transformed Forest from a struggling Second Division side into champions of England and twice champions of Europe.
The defeat also confirmed Forest’s relegation from the first Premier League season, adding sadness to an already historic afternoon. As the final whistle sounded, the City Ground paid tribute to one of the greatest managerial figures in football history.
