ZDS Cup win at Wembley
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1992 Forest beat Southampton to win the Zenith Data Systems Cup.
Nottingham Forest lifted the Zenith Data Systems Cup by beating Southampton 3-2 after extra time at Wembley.
The competition did not carry the weight of the FA Cup or League Cup, but a Wembley final still offered silverware and a day out for supporters. Brian Clough’s side made the most of it, turning a tight final into another trophy for the club’s honours list.
Scot Gemmill scored twice for Forest, with Kingsley Black also on target. Gemmill opened the scoring with a right-footed volley, and after Southampton had fought back to 2-2, he struck again in extra time from close range to win the final.
The victory gave Forest their second Full Members’ Cup success, adding another cup triumph to Clough’s long record at the club. It was not the most famous trophy of the era, but it was still silverware won at Wembley, and that always carries its own place in supporter memory.
