Keane double powers Wembley run
On this day in 1991 Forest beat Tranmere Rovers 2–0 in the ZDS Cup northern area semi-final.
Roy Keane pushed Forest closer to Wembley by scoring twice in a 2-0 Zenith Data Systems Cup win over Tranmere Rovers.
The northern area semi-final was played at Prenton Park, where Tranmere had already enjoyed a lively cup run of their own. Keane broke the game open in the 34th minute and scored again in the 53rd, turning a tight away tie into a controlled Forest win.
For Brian Clough’s side, the competition gave the squad another route to a trophy during a busy 1991-92 season. The League Cup and league campaign carried more attention, but the ZDS Cup still offered a Wembley final, and Forest treated the path seriously enough to keep advancing.
The Tranmere win set up a northern area final against Leicester City. Forest drew 1-1 away in the first leg, then won 2-0 at the City Ground to progress 3-1 on aggregate.
The run ended with silverware. Forest beat Southampton 3-2 after extra time at Wembley in March 1992, with Scot Gemmill scoring twice and Kingsley Black also on target.
