NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Jemson hat trick beats Saints
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1991 Jemson scores a hat trick as Forest beat Southampton in an FA Cup replay.
Nigel Jemson carried Nottingham Forest through an FA Cup replay with a hat trick in a 3-1 win over Southampton at the City Ground.
The fifth-round tie had required a second meeting, and Forest needed someone to take command of the occasion. Jemson did exactly that. His three goals gave Brian Clough’s side the cutting edge they needed, turning a potentially awkward replay into a clear home victory.
The result pushed Forest further along the road to the 1991 FA Cup final. Cup replays could be tense, especially when the first match had failed to separate the teams, but this one became Jemson’s night. His finishing gave the match its identity and gave supporters a performance to remember from that cup run.
Forest’s 3-1 win over Southampton sent them into the next round and kept alive Clough’s pursuit of the one major domestic trophy that had eluded him at the club. The run would eventually reach Wembley, where Tottenham Hotspur beat Forest 2-1 in the final.
