Hodge & Parker sink Newcastle in cup
On this day in 1991 Forest beat Newcastle United 3–0 in an FA Cup replay.
Forest kept their FA Cup run alive with a 3–0 replay win over Newcastle United at the City Ground.
The tie had already been difficult, with the teams drawing 2–2 at St James’ Park in the first meeting. Back in Nottingham, Nigel Clough gave Forest the lead in the first half before Steve Hodge and Garry Parker scored late on to finish the replay.
Parker’s goal came five minutes after Hodge’s goal, turning a narrow advantage into a decisive 3–0 win. It came from a flowing move started by Clough, who played a first-time ball from inside the Forest half to the onrushing Gary Crosby. Crosby carried the ball to the edge of the Newcastle area and squared it to Parker, who calmly slotted the ball home.
Forest later beat Southampton, Norwich City and West Ham United to reach the final. The run ended at Wembley, where Forest lost 2–1 to Tottenham Hotspur after extra time. The Newcastle replay was not the defining match of that run, but it was one of the clear steps that kept the journey alive.
