Chapman goal beats Everton in cup run
On this day in 1989 Lee Chapman scores as Forest beat Everton 1–0 in the League Cup fourth round.
Nottingham Forest moved through a tight League Cup fourth-round tie by beating Everton 1–0 at the City Ground.
The match was still goalless deep into the second half before Lee Chapman found the breakthrough in the final ten minutes. His late goal was enough to settle the tie, sending Brian Clough’s holders into the quarter-finals by the narrowest margin.
Everton had already been beaten by Forest in the Full Members’ Cup final earlier in 1989, and this was another close cup meeting between the clubs. This time there was no seven-goal Wembley drama, just one late Chapman finish at the City Ground.
Forest went on to defend the League Cup successfully that season, eventually beating Oldham Athletic 1–0 at Wembley. Chapman’s winner against Everton was one of the quieter but important steps in another cup-winning campaign.
