NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Liverpool semi-final heartbreak
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1989 Forest lose the rearranged FA Cup semi-final to Liverpool.
Nottingham Forest lost 3-1 to Liverpool at Old Trafford in the rearranged FA Cup semi-final after the abandoned Hillsborough tie.
The match was impossible to separate from the tragedy that had preceded it. Football had to resume, but the occasion carried a weight far beyond a normal semi-final. Forest’s players and supporters entered a fixture shaped by grief, uncertainty and the difficulty of returning to competition.
Neil Webb gave Forest a response before half-time, equalising after Liverpool had gone ahead early. For a short spell, the cup tie was alive again, but Liverpool pulled clear after the break and Forest’s FA Cup run ended.
For Forest supporters, the match remained painful for reasons beyond elimination. The football mattered, but it sat inside a much larger human story. The result closed the cup campaign, yet the day was remembered with a restraint and sadness no ordinary semi-final defeat could carry.
