Everton beaten for Simod Cup trophy
On this day in 1989 Forest beat Everton to win the Simod Cup.
Nottingham Forest won the Simod Cup after a 4-3 extra-time victory over Everton at Wembley.
The Full Members’ Cup final became a seven-goal match, with Forest twice having to come from behind in normal time. Garry Parker gave Brian Clough’s side their first response, then struck again producing a goal that still stands out from the afternoon.
Parker’s second goal came after a swift Forest counterattack and has been described by the club as one of the great Wembley goals. Breaking forward at pace, he arrived in the Everton box and finished superbly, completing the move with a sharp, composed strike that made it 2-2 and forced the final into extra time.
Extra time gave the afternoon its decisive Forest moments. Lee Chapman put Forest ahead early in the additional period, and after Everton levelled again, Chapman scored once more three minutes from time to win the trophy.
The match did not carry the prestige of the FA Cup or League Cup, but a Wembley final with seven goals, Parker’s memorable counterattacking goal, and a Forest trophy still gave supporters plenty to remember.
For Forest, it was another piece of silverware during a strong late-1980s spell under Brian Clough. Everton were beaten, the cup was won, and Wembley had produced one of the club’s livelier finals.
