10-0 aggregate cup rout of Chester
On this day in 1988 Forest win at Chester City to complete a 10–0 aggregate League Cup victory.
Forest turned a League Cup second-round tie into a statement of attacking strength by completing a 10–0 aggregate win over Chester City.
Brian Clough’s side had already taken control with a 6–0 first-leg win at the City Ground. The second leg at Chester ended 4–0, with Tommy Gaynor scoring a hat-trick and Gary Crosby also on target to make the aggregate score emphatic.
It was not a tense cup night, but it still showed the sharpness and depth of Forest’s 1988–89 squad. A tie that might have been managed carefully after the first leg was instead finished with another heavy win away from home.
The League Cup run did not stop there. Forest went on through the competition and later beat Luton Town 3–1 at Wembley in the final, with Nigel Clough and Neil Webb scoring on the day.
For supporters, the Chester tie belonged to the early stages of a trophy-winning campaign: routine on paper, ruthless in execution, and remembered for the sheer size of the aggregate score.
