NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
League Cup victory at Derby
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1985 Forest beat Derby County 2–1 away in the League Cup.
Nottingham Forest’s League Cup win at Derby County carried the extra satisfaction that comes with a derby victory away from home.
Forest won 2–1 at the Baseball Ground in the third round, recovering after Jeff Chandler had put Derby ahead from the penalty spot. John Metgod brought Forest level before Franz Carr scored the winner.
The competition gave the night its formal importance, but the opponent gave it its edge. Forest and Derby meetings always came with rivalry attached, and a cup tie away from home left little room for a quiet result.
Brian Clough’s side had enough quality to turn the match around. With Steve Sutton in goal, Stuart Pearce and Metgod in defence, and players such as Neil Webb, Nigel Clough, Peter Davenport and Carr in the side, Forest had the experience and attacking threat to respond.
The result sent Forest through and gave supporters a clean derby memory: behind on the road, level through Metgod, and through thanks to Carr’s winner. Forest’s League Cup run ended in the fourth round with a 3–1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers.
