Pearce league debut at Luton
On this day in 1985 Stuart Pearce makes his Forest league debut in a draw at Luton Town.
Stuart Pearce’s Forest league debut came in a 1-1 First Division draw away to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
The match was notable beyond Pearce’s first appearance because it was also Luton’s first league game on their new artificial surface. That gave the afternoon an unusual edge, with Forest having to deal with both the opposition and a pitch that became a talking point in its own right.
Luton went ahead through Brian Stein, who chipped Hans Segers after a pass from Ricky Hill. Forest equalised against the run of play when Neil Webb struck a powerful free-kick from around 20 yards.
For Pearce, the afternoon was the beginning of one of the club’s most important modern player stories. He had arrived from Coventry City in a £200,000 move and quickly became far more than a new left-back.
Pearce went on to become Forest captain, a fierce defensive presence and one of the club’s defining figures of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The draw at Luton was modest as a result, but significant as a starting point.
