Victory at PSV fuels UEFA Cup run
On this day in 1983 Forest beat PSV Eindhoven 2–1 away in the UEFA Cup second round first leg.
Forest earned an impressive European away win by beating PSV Eindhoven 2–1 in the UEFA Cup second round first leg.
The first half finished goalless, leaving the tie finely balanced at the Philips Stadion. Brian Clough’s side had plenty of European experience by this stage, but PSV still represented a serious away test in a competition Forest wanted to attack properly.
Peter Davenport gave Forest the lead early in the second half. PSV levelled from the penalty spot through Jurrie Koolhof late in the match, but Forest responded before the end. Colin Walsh converted a late penalty to restore the lead and send Forest home with a major advantage.
The late winner changed the shape of the tie. Instead of returning to Nottingham level, Forest carried a 2–1 lead back to the City Ground.
Forest won the second leg 1–0 and progressed 3–1 on aggregate. The PSV tie became an important step in a UEFA Cup run that later carried Forest all the way to the semi-finals.
