Ward header wins against old club
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1982 Peter Ward scores as Forest beat Brighton 1–0 at the Goldstone Ground.
Peter Ward returned to the Goldstone Ground and scored the only goal as Forest beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1–0.
The setting gave the goal its extra edge. Ward had been a major favourite at Brighton, where his goals had made him one of the club’s most celebrated modern players. Scoring against his old side therefore made the away win more than a routine league result.
Ward scored with a header on the stroke of half-time, deciding a tight First Division match against the club where he had made his name.
The moment is remembered because of that personal connection. Players often return to former grounds, but few do so and score the winning goal. For Ward, it was a sharp reminder of his Brighton past and his Forest present meeting in one decisive touch.
