Ian Bowyer scored twice as Forest beat Valencia 2–1 in the first leg of the European Super Cup final at the City Ground.
Valencia struck first shortly after half-time through Darío Felman, a goal that immediately complicated the tie. Bowyer equalised for Forest on 57 minutes, then scored again one minute from time to give Brian Clough’s side a narrow lead to take to Spain.
The win gave Forest another major European night at home, but the away goal proved crucial. Felman’s goal meant Valencia could still win the trophy with a narrow home victory in the return leg.
Valencia won the second leg 1–0, making the aggregate score 2–2 and taking the Super Cup on away goals. Bowyer’s double won the night in Nottingham, but it was not enough to keep the trophy at the end of the tie.
