7-0 League Cup rout at Bury
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1980 Forest win 7-0 at Bury in the League Cup.
Nottingham Forest produced a ruthless League Cup performance at Gigg Lane, beating Bury 7-0 in the third round.
The scoreline was Forest’s biggest winning margin of the 1980-81 season, and it came away from home against lower-division opposition. Brian Clough’s side made the gap in quality obvious, building a 3-0 lead by half-time before adding four more after the break.
Raimondo Ponte scored a hat-trick, Garry Birtles scored twice, and Gary Mills and Viv Anderson also found the net. The spread of scorers gave the match the feel of a complete attacking performance rather than a narrow cup success.
For Forest, the night was a reminder of the standards still expected from a squad filled with European Cup winners. Cup ties can become awkward quickly, but this one turned into a clear and heavy victory. Unfortunately, the League Cup run ended in the next round, when Forest lost 4-1 away to Watford.
