Comeback at BFC Dynamo

On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1980 Forest overturn BFC Dynamo in the European Cup.

Iconic match memories

Landmark European night

Nottingham Forest kept their European Cup defence alive with a 3-1 away win over BFC Dynamo in Berlin.

The quarter-final had looked dangerous after Forest lost the first leg 1-0 at the City Ground. Brian Clough’s side travelled to East Germany needing to overturn the tie away from home, a demanding task for any defending European champions.

Trevor Francis scored twice for Forest, first with a right-footed finish after David Needham’s headed assist and then again from a Martin O’Neill pass. John Robertson added the third from the penalty spot before BFC Dynamo pulled one back with a penalty of their own.

The comeback took Forest through 3-2 on aggregate and kept them on course to retain the trophy. BFC Dynamo had put the holders under real pressure, but Forest found the result they needed away from home and continued the run that ended with another European Cup triumph in Madrid.
